City of Dayton Unanimously Approves Resolution Calling for Greater Accountability for Ohio’s Charter Schools

The Dayton City Commission and Mayor Nan Whaley kept up the momentum for reform of Ohio’s charter school laws by unanimously approving a resolution calling on the legislature to take action. The resolution, passed by the Dayton City Commission during their meeting on Feb.18, calls upon the Ohio General Assembly to reform state laws governing Ohio’s Charter school system.

“We commend the leadership of Mayor Whaley and the Dayton City Commissioners for their support of responsible and necessary Charter school reform by passing this resolution,” said Ohio Education Association President Becky Higgins.  “Mayor Whaley has proven to be a strong advocate for and champion of high quality public education.”

The Ohio legislature is considering various charter reform proposals such as House Bill 2 and House Bill 64, which would attempt to fix some aspects of Ohio’s broken charter school laws. Passage of the resolution by the city of Dayton continues the positive momentum for reform that has been building over the last few months.

“Our schools are the foundation for creating a first-class workforce and a strong community,” said Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley. “But we need our legislative partners in Columbus to support our efforts and pass meaningful charter reform laws that will strengthen our education system overall.”
